A nationwide event is getting ready to happen this Thursday called Be Hope to Her.  This event is designed to bring awareness to the world water crisis and in particular the role that women play in water collection in Africa.  It is hard to believe that we in the developed world take clean water for granted when there are so many others that don’t have it.

Think about it, when you want water you go to the bathroom or kitchen, flip open the valve, and presto! you have clean water that you can drink.  Now, same situation but you are in Sub-Sahara Africa.  You want clean water so you pick up a bucket, walk 30 minutes to the nearest water source, fill the bucket, walk back, screen the water for bugs and leafs, boil the water to kill the bacteria, let it cool, and then get to drink the water.

So basically a 2 minute process in the developed world of getting a glass of water (including walking time) takes 1.5-2 hours in the undeveloped world.

This is why Nuru (and Amizade on the WVU campus) are hosting this event.  We are bringing awareness to this issue through a demonstration where women are carrying buckets of water around campus while men are holding signs and handing out information sheets with world water facts on them (such as 1 in 6 people don’t have access to water).

Will you be hope to her?  Find out more information at the website www.bhope2her.org.

Pictures from the event will come soon.  In the mean time check out the WVU Registration Day here nuru.beamerfoto.com/BH2O/

Until next time, Ciao Ciao!
